Dreamgirls

It is completely beyond me how anyone could make a movie involving Motown music or even the Motown scene and have it end up with such a truly awful musical score. Never the less this is somehow what the producers of this atrocity have managed to do. Every number sounds as if it were squeezed out of the same tube of Crest toothpaste.

The machinations behind the beginnings of Motown records and the rise of the Supremes are somewhat interesting for the first third of the movie. A musical quarrel during which the only one of the girl trio who can actually sing is cast out (mostly because of her generous proportions it would seem) is a watershed moment. Watershed because the group starts a meteoric rise to mediocrity and the audience descends into a hell where musical number follows musical number, each worse than the last.

Eddie Murphy is decent as the James Brown character but unfortunately can't resist being Eddie Murphy at the last, dropping trou on national television and then conveniently dying.

The costumes are good. There are some very nice suits in it.
